ICON is one of the defining works from Sue Webster’s major exhibition Birth of an Icon, which opened at Firstsite in January 2026 to significant critical acclaim. Stripped back to a single, loaded word rendered in vivid red neon, ICON sits at the intersection of cultural mythology, celebrity, power, and collective desire.
Webster has long been interested in how society constructs meaning around objects, people and symbols. In ICON, that enquiry is distilled into its most potent and seductive form. It also happens to be the 4th track from Siouxsie and the Banshees' seminal 2nd album, Join Hands.
Proceeds from the sale directly support Firstsite’s creative and charitable work, contributing to the commissioning of new art, public programmes and creative opportunities for communities and young people.
This is a strictly limited edition of 15, each accompanied by a certificate of ownership and edition number and can be freestanding or mounted directly onto the wall.
